Preek
First of all, I would like to thank father Knudsen for giving me this opportunity to visit your community. It is an honour for me to be with you in such a nice church in your beautiful city of Amsterdam.

My little children, let us not love in word nor in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

Dear friends in Christ,

Just after Pentecost, the church gives us to contemplate those beautiful words of the apostle Saint John in his first epistle.
Why? The church has been founded in Pentecost by the reception of the Holy Spirit and this reception has given to the apostles the necessary strength to spread all over the world the good news of the Gospel. People working in publicity or communication and marketing know how important it is to be sure that the heart of the message has been received and understood by the people. Otherwise the communication has not been successful.

After Pentecost, we are at the very beginning of the church: the apostles have to spread over the deepest meaning of the message of Jesus. But what is it? The center of the message is Love. Mt 22, 36: Master, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
This is the first and more important commandment, the center of Jesus’ message that the apostles have to spread over the world. The words of Saint John are a clear formulation and a practical explanation of Jesus teaching.

Love in deed and in truth means that I have to ask me: What are the needs of my neighbour? What can I do concrete for him? How can I be closer to him? And John answers: share the goods. But not only that, it is much more: I have to give my own life, like our master Jesus Christ did for us. That’s the reason why the Fraternity of Saint Peter has a mission in Colombia.

Dear friends in Christ, I have the grace to work for the Fraternity of Saint Peter and for the Church in a country with many poor people, people working very hard for a miserable salary. Let me tell you that as a priest seeing this Colombian reality makes me reflect on how little we have to complain about.

Dear friends in Christ, the Church is the hope of the poor. And in the village of Anolaima where the Fraternity has now been working for 6 years, the Fraternity is part of the hope of the village.

The village where I am working is very poor. It is in the countryside where no roads are found and where mud and dust are our neighbours. There are a few cars but mainly horses and donkeys for the peasants who farm by hand. The houses are very simple with one bedroom for the whole family and a bed is shared by 2 or 3 children. Some of the children are not able to go to school. They are abandoned by the politicians and by the rich. They lie to them because they don’t care about them. We, on the contrary, because we know that everyone is a member of the body of Christ, created and loved by God since the beginning, we try to serve those populations as much as possible. Caritas urget nos. Charity compels us.

What are the needs? People need to know and to love Jesus Christ and our first mission is to make them know and love Him. That’s why they need good witnesses of Jesus Christ and this is the first help I ask you: pray for us to be the good instruments that God needs to touch the hearts of these people! We must be holy priests, that means men of prayer… with a total giving of ourselves to our brothers who suffer and hunger for Christ who we can bring through our ministry.

The second need is the education: without education, no future. To respond to these two needs we opened a primary school which has just began its third year. We started our school in our house with 18 children and now we have 70 children. The growth is exponential and we really need a school building. A real catholic school is so important. Our aim is to educate good Catholics with an excellent academic level.
We need your help because we must begin construction on a new school building to be able to open grades and increase the number of students.

Another challenge that we have is the sponsorship program that we began for the poorest families. We need sponsors to offer the tuition to those who can’t afford to attend our school. Can you imagine that with only 40 euros you can offer one month of studying in our school? With 400 euros you offer one year! Give me 20 euros and I can offer the bus for a 4 year-old child who lives at a 2 hours walk in the mountains and save him and his mother one hour a walk. Give me 2 euros and this child can have lunch today!

Dear friends in Christ, our mission is your mission too! The Church is missionary in her nature since Pentecost thus it is the task of everyone. The Church is bigger than our parish, bigger than our diocese or our country and we are members of the same body. If a part of the body suffers, it is the whole body which suffers.

Dear friends, God calls us to take part to the mission as at the great supper of the gospel of today. Are we going to respond with generosity or will we say: hold me excused?

Dear friends, we want to belong to those who will take part one day at the supper in the kingdom of heaven. Amen.
